Nia's Happy Life

Nia's name is actually Snezhana. Originally from Belarus, she has been living in Barcelona for two years where everyone calls her Nia! She has always been fascinated by people's faces. Every time she draws a portrait, she loses the link with reality and immerses herself in the research process to discover what makes each face unique and inimitable.

Although she did not have an art education as such, Nia was in frequent contact with artists and illustrators in her capacity as a children's book editor for 15 years.

Nia's Happy STYLE

It was in 2013 that Nia fell in love with the collage technique. She came back from a trip to London with tons of papers to keep souvenirs of every moment of her trip: boarding pass, sales label etc... She wondered how to exploit these treasures. Putting them away in a drawer seemed inconceivable. That's when she decided to draw the Tower of London, which she covered with paper as she went along. It was magical to mix subject and memories.

Why we LOVE Nia

Nia is a resourceful young woman! We admire her ability to turn what we would otherwise throw away into a unique work of art.

She carefully selects these scraps of paper to classify them by colour range to create fun, recycled and aesthetic portraits!

The Happy Funky PORTRAIT of Nia

♥ Do you remember your first aesthetic shock?
A pair of majestic deer that we met with my grandmother walking in the forest. I was 4 or 5 years old. They looked like aliens or characters from the old fairy tale, creatures of nature.

♥ The artist you would like to meet? What would you say to her?
I would have loved to meet Frida Khalo. I would have said to her: Frida if there is an aesthetic and beautiful way in the world to express painful things - it is your art.

♥ What is your favourite colour? What does it inspire you?
I am a fan of turquoise especially in combination with burgundy red. It hypnotizes me. I find that it always looks at the shadows on people's faces.

♥ Which museum gives you the greatest emotion? Why do you ask?
The Museum of Modern Art in New York and Krakow. There I feel that the art forms are unlimited and it gives me the conviction that most of my wildest ideas deserve to be realized.

♥ Which work of art would you buy without hesitation if you had an unlimited budget?
"The Two Fridas" by Frida Khalo and "The Starry Night" by Vincent van Gogh.

♥ In which city do you feel happiest? Why do you think so? Share your 3 favourite addresses.
I love Barcelona, this city relaxes and inspires me at the same time. Especially the mountains. Here I feel that everything is possible and that life is a path between material things and invisible magic. My favourite places in Barcelona are :

- the terrace of the Montblanc bar in Tibidabo.

- the abandoned bunkers MUHBA Turó de la Rovira in Can Baro

- the small bar with a magical atmosphere Bodega del Born

♥ What book keeps you up all night?
"Running with the Wolves". Clarissa Pinkola Estes.

♥ What are your biggest sources of inspiration?
Feedback from people on their portraits and walks in the mountains.

♥ What's the funkiest thing you've done in your life?
My first experience of painting graffiti at night on the walls of an abandoned building (considering my age, 39 and the fact that I have always been a "home girl" with no connection to a street culture)

♥ What is your definition of happiness?
Happiness is waking up every morning excited about the newness of the day and having the energy to do everything you love.
